🌿 Environment & Ecology

Conventions, protected areas and climate terms that explain nearly every environment headline.

Useful for: SSC CGL, RRB NTPC, CUET, UPSC prelims basics.

Environment questions are heavily concept-based. When news reports a new Ramsar site, a tiger reserve or a climate pledge, the exam usually asks about the underlying idea: what a Ramsar site is, what a biosphere reserve protects, what a nationally determined contribution means.

Learn the major international conventions with the issue each covers, then learn the main categories of protected areas in India. With that structure, a new addition to any list is easy to place.

Concepts to know

Ramsar Convention

International treaty (1971) for the conservation of wetlands.

Montreal Protocol

Phases out substances that deplete the ozone layer.

Paris Agreement

Countries submit nationally determined contributions to keep warming well below 2Β°C.

National parks vs wildlife sanctuaries

National parks have stricter protection and no human activity such as grazing; sanctuaries allow some regulated activity.

Biosphere reserves

Areas designated to conserve biodiversity along with sustainable use by local communities.

Greenhouse gases

Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and fluorinated gases trap heat and drive climate change.

Sample 2: Which gas is a greenhouse gas?
  1. Nitrogen
  2. Methane
  3. Argon
  4. Neon

Answer: B. Methane

Methane absorbs heat strongly. Nitrogen, argon and neon are not greenhouse gases.

Sample 3: Chilika Lake is located in:
  1. Kerala
  2. Odisha
  3. Assam
  4. Gujarat

Answer: B. Odisha

Chilika, a Ramsar site and India's largest coastal lagoon, is in Odisha.
